Position Summary

Assumes responsibility for compliance with institutional policies and provisions outlined in the Code of Student Conduct in an effort to resolve student conduct violations, determine appropriate charges and/or formal sanctions as well as seek case resolution. In all actions, adheres to FERPA and other applicable federal and state regulations regarding student records access and retention. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University’s students.

Description of Key Responsibility

Receives and reviews all student incident reports generated by Public Safety and the Office of Residential Life to determine Code of Student Conduct violations, assign sanctions and seek case resolution as appropriate. Assigns cases to Residential Life staff as appropriate, serving as a primary appellate officer for all student conduct cases adjudicated by Residential Life. Manages sanction compliance tracking by maintaining accurate and timely student information in the StarRez database.

Administers and oversees the student conduct system. Chairs student conduct hearings, leads questioning and, if necessary, casts the deciding vote on case determination. Imposes conduct sanctions and, when appropriate, makes recommendations for suspension and/or expulsion from the University.

Reviews and oversees the maintenance, security and proper disclosure of student conduct files. Provides certifications for external agencies requesting student conduct information in accordance with FERPA guidelines. Advises students, faculty and staff on conduct issues as necessary and appropriate.

Collaborates with Residential Life on the selection, training and supervision of staff, annual goal setting, outcome assessments as well as accurate and complete record maintenance in compliance with record retention policies. Actively participates in communicating policies, procedures and services through print and online materials in an timely manner.

Examines and evaluates all sanctions rendered for consistency and equity. Systematically analyzes the effectiveness of the conduct system, annually reviewing applicable Code of Conduct policies and procedures, recommending changes as necessary and/or appropriate. Compiles reports and summaries regarding caseloads, conduct cases, recommendations and outcomes.

Advocates for student’s rights and due process in an educational and student development framed environment. Serves as a member of the Invisible Support Network (ISN) in an effort to holistically review student concerns. Understands basic threat assessment protocols. Assists in the coordination of the Campus Crime Statistics Reports, including the Clery Report.

Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with multiple internal constituencies including, but not limited to, Student Affairs Officials, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Title IX Coordinator and Public Safety regarding student and student organization disciplinary issues. Coordinates hearing board involvement, as appropriate.
