Position Summary

Assumes responsibility for researching, developing and analyzing institutional data as well as overseeing special research projects for use in informing institutional strategic planning, decision support and reporting initiatives. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University’s students.

Supports institutional decision making and business intelligence by assembling, analyzing and interpreting data in a concise summary. Assists in compliance with the reporting requirements of applicable federal, state and accrediting agencies or private sector firms, other educational institutions, and/or other external collectors of university data. Establishes and evaluates data integrity and reliability standards in an effort to measure, validate and/or verify accuracy and internal consistency of data used for reporting.

Designs, coordinates and/or conducts studies based on institutional needs and priorities. Exercises project responsibility from conceptual design and problem definition/hypothesis development through to data collection, analysis, interpretation and findings, which may include, but is not limited to, working with multiple campus constituencies to define the needs and constraints of a project, extracting data from various institutional data systems and merging of data sets.

Analyzes and makes recommendations on retention data related to the University’s at-risk student population as well as to enhance data collection and reporting efforts as necessary and/or appropriate.

Assists in the development and analysis of institutional key performance indicators (KPI) and outcomes. Monitors institutional benchmarks and conducts peer analysis for competitive advantage and business review. Develops and runs various models for forecasting and projections.

Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with various internal and external constituents. Participates in strategic planning initiatives including data generation and analysis using both internal and external databases and sources.

Researches, analyzes and disseminates data regarding trends in higher education for divisions, departments and offices throughout the University. Maintains strict confidentiality in all matters involving the University, its agents or employees that come to the attention of the incumbent through whatever means, except as publishable in carrying out specific enumerated responsibilities of the job.

Analytical. Work is non-standardized and widely varied requiring the interpretation and application of a substantial variety of procedures, policies or precedents used in combination. Frequently, the application of multiple, technical activities is employed; therefore, analytical ability and inductive thinking are required. Problem solving involves identification and analysis of diverse issues.

Decision Making

Analytical. Supervisor is available to establish broad objectives relative to basic position duties or departmental responsibilities. Independent judgment is required to study previously established, often partially relevant guidelines, plan for various interrelated activities and coordinate such activities within a work unit or while completing a project.

Internal Communication

Requires regular contacts to discuss issues of moderate importance and to respond to inquiries. Also requires continuing contact with officials at higher levels on matters requiring cooperation, explanation and persuasion.

External Communication

Requires regular external contacts to discuss issues of moderate importance and to respond to inquiries. Occasionally requires contacts with the public involving the enforcement of regulations, policies and procedures.

Customer Relations

Contact with customers involves more complex servicing over the telephone, in writing or in person to resolve complaints, make adjustments or correct mistakes about a selected service, product or capability.

Managerial Skills

Responsible for orienting and training others, and assigning and reviewing their work. May also be responsible for acting in a “lead” or “senior” capacity over other positions performing essentially the same work, or related technical tasks and reporting to a higher level on a formal basis.

Knowledge & Skills

Professional Skills. Requires knowledge of theories and practices of a professional field. This level of skill is typically reserved for an individual with a four-year degree or a high level of vocational skill demonstrated by a number of years of on-the-job experience. Writes reports using technical data requiring considerable interpretation. Develops new methods and procedures. Frequently applies knowledge to practical issues and problems.
