Position Summary

Assumes responsibility for the leadership and prudent oversight of the English Language Institute (ELI), directing the University’s English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and associated support services as well as fostering the relationship with EC Higher Education Pathway Program for the University in support of international students. Performs all duties in full support of the University’s mission, understanding that the positive and effective execution of these duties are instrumental to the education of the University’s students.

Establishes, cultivates and maintains a collaborative and effective relationship, serving as the primary liaison, between the EC Higher Education and the University in an effort to assist program representatives with supporting high caliber international students in the delivery of an intensive academic and linguistic program. Works to assist EC program representatives with student integration leading to academic success and increased student retention rates. Serves as the liaison between EC program representatives and University constituents in an effort to manage and organize program needs. *

Develop and designs language laboratory curriculum as well as instructs English as a Second Language (ESL) and associated international sections of English Composition as necessary and/or appropriate. Assumes responsibility for self-evaluation and research in the discipline.

Working closely with the Office of Admission, serves as a primary liaison between staff, faculty, students, foreign embassies, cultural attaches, corporate sponsors and the community at large regarding ELI activities, programs and associated support services for the University of Hartford international graduate and undergraduate student population. Compiles, records and applies statistical information in support of both short- and long-range strategic goals designed to enrich the ELI and best support students. *

Researches, develops and evaluates programs, policies and/or standards regarding ESL for international students who are applying to the University of Hartford for an academic degree program as well as special short and long-term programs for designated groups as necessary and/or appropriate.

Recruits, tests and advises international students on English as a second language. Updates student records in compliance with institutional data standards in an effort to ensure the integrity of the database.

Establishes, cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with various internal constitutents in the creation of ELI recruiting and marketing materials. Working closely and collaboratively with the Office of Marketing and Communications, designs applications, evaluations, testing and other ELI materials consistent with institutional branding guidelines. Handles highly sensitive information with confidentiality and tact.
